Vazhaikai (Raw plaintain) - 4-5
Urad Dal - 2 tsps
Mustard seeds for seasoning - 1 1/2 tsps
Hing - 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves - few
Salt - as required
Oil for cooking
Ingredients for podi (powder):
Urad dal - 4 tsps
Chana Dal - 3 tsps
Black Pepper - 1/2 tsp
Dry Red Chillies -6-7
Curry leaves - few
Coriander (daniya) seeds - 2 tsps
In 1/2 a tsp oil roast all the items and grind into a coarse powder.
Method:
Peel the skin of the plaintain and cut into small cubes and put in a vessel with water.
Take a kadai, pour little oil and add mustard seeds, urad dal, hing, and curry leaves for seasoning.
After the spluttering of mustard seeds add the small cut plaintain cubes after draining off the water.
Now add required amount of salt and sufficient water to cover the plaintain pieces and cook.
Alternatively you can put the plaintain pieces in a microwave bowl with water to cover the pieces and cook for about 8-10 minutes and the add it to the seasoning and mix nicely. This will be a little quicker.
If you are cooking in the kadai with water close a lid on top and cover it till the water evaporates and the pieces get cooked.
Now before removing from fire add the ground masala powder to the plaintain pieces and mix nicely and close for about 5 minutes and cook.
After everything is mixed nicely and the vegetable is cooked thoroughly, remove from fire.
Now the Vazhaikai podi curry is ready to be eaten with a nice curryleaves flavour and to be eaten with sambar or rasam rice.
In the end you can also add fresh grated coconut (optional) for an added taste or to enhance the flavour.

This podi curry is really unique.
ReplyDeleteNice. I love green plantains but rarely prepare them b/c many recipes fry them heavily in oil, which they soak up like eggplant. This, however, is lovely, easy, and very different.
